A Conversation with Newton Mayoral Candidate Marc Laredo

Core members of LGBTQ+ Newton had an introductory meeting with Mayoral Candidate Marc Laredo and campaign assistant John Rice to share our vision, to highlight areas lacking LGBTQ visibility and representation and to hear Marc’s intentions of city support from his administration in the future should he be elected as mayor for the city of Newton.

We shared our understanding about what Newton’s commitment to being “a welcoming and inclusive city for all residents” night look like … especially for the LGBTQ community during a climate of increased anti-gay rhetoric and targeted attacks on the trans community coming from the current White House administration.

The conversation included practical suggestions to support and advocate for the Newton’s LGBTQ community and its allies to convey “welcoming”, visibility and safety for the queer community in neighborhoods, among businesses, on the City’s website and through programs that celebrate diversity and inclusivity.

The conversation with Marc Laredo was promising and we look forward to collaborating with him and his administration should Marc be elected the next mayor for the City of Newton. In the wake of pushback against LGBTQ+ rights in the courts and federal government this year, it is encouraging to know that present and past Newton leaders respect the rights, dignity and differences of its citizens across all 13 villages, and have committed to keeping Newton a safe and thriving city for LGBTQ+ residents, businesses and families.
