Newton Flag Raising

Happy PRIDE friends!
As we celebrate the flag raisings, parades and festivals happening this month, let us remember and honor the courageous persons of the June 28, 1969 Stonewall Riots, a pivotal event in the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
In observing Pride Month, I’m reminded it is about resistance and activism, visibility and acceptance, rights and equality, diversity and affirmation, solidarity and allies, accomplishments and contributions … love and community! Grateful for each of you and your presence in the world.
Every year in Newton for LGBTQ+ Pride Month, the Human Rights Commission raises the Pride flag at City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Ave, South Lawn, and honors an individual or individuals for their contributions and commitment to the LGBTQ+ community in Newton.
We come together tomorrow, Tuesday, June 3rd, at 5:30-6:30pm to honor Hattie Kerwin Derrick, Director of Community Engagement and Inclusion. She is also the city’s LGBTQ+ Liaison.
The flag raising ceremony will be followed by a resource fair and ice cream!
